Ashkelon Desalination Plant

Activity description:

Visit the Ashkelon Desalination Plant, an opportunity to learn more about Israel’s world-leading desalination technologies, continued research and development, and explore how the country’s environmental water solution has become the building block for numerous projects around the world. The guided tour of the desalination plant includes an explanation of the desalination process and a short film. You will see firsthand how the desalination technologies affect water management in Israel!

In 2005, Israel began using reverse-osmosis seawater desalination to enhance its limited natural water supply. Today, the country has not only overcome its water shortages but it now produces 20% more water than it needs. The country’s technological savvy has allowed it to preserve water as a natural resource via these desalination efforts. Moreover, desalination often comes with a high environmental cost, but the proprietary technology used in Israel’s plants such as Pressure Center Design, Energy Recovery System and Boron Removal System, among others, increase efficiency while at the same time reduce energy consumption.
