Encounters Outside the Box

Activity description:

Take a journey into the heart of the ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) world and discover the values and lifestyle of this complex community. Enjoy traditional cuisine and browse the neighborhood shops with a local guide to get a taste of Haredi fashion, music, books, and culture.

Haredi Jews (sometimes referred to as ultra-Orthodox) are the most visibly identifiable subset of Jews. Representing about 13% of the population in Israel, they are characterized by their strict adherence to halakha (Jewish law) and traditions, in opposition to modern values and practices, and therefore tend to limit their contact with the outside world. Encounters Outside the Box is a social enterprise that promotes acquaintance, understanding, and cooperation with the ultra-orthodox society in Israel. It strives to reduce alienation and ignorance through direct interaction with this unique community.

Brother Olivier, Abu Gosh

Activity description:

Meet Brother Olivier, who has become a symbol of coexistence, for a heartwarming conversation with a man that has dedicated his life to bringing people together.

Brother Olivier has lived at the Benedictine monastery in the Arab village of Abu Ghosh for decades. Born to a secular French family in the suburbs of Paris, he adopted the Catholic faith and was sent to Israel as a young monk, becoming fascinated by the Jewish state after watching the movie “Exodus” as a child. He landed in Israel on July 10, 1977, the same date that the Exodus ship had arrived in Israel 30 years earlier. The Catholic monastery in Abu Ghosh is a peaceful oasis where half a dozen monks live and study. Every week they recite the entirety of Psalms in Hebrew in addition to their work in the monastery gardens. The order is dedicated to welcoming guests and hosts tourists, school groups, and even Israeli army units on its grounds daily. A fluent Hebrew speaker, Brother Oliver has dedicated his life to forging a relationship between Catholicism and the Jewish state. He repeatedly requested Israeli citizenship and was granted it by special order in 2005.
